Celebrating Mothers
From the early days of scraped knees, home-made flashcards and afternoon tea parties consisting of water served in plastic red cups in a tiny tent, they are always there. Educating and teaching us, cheering us on proudly, encouraging us at every step and reminding us of our worth when we forget it.
Whether it’s our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, older sisters or another motherly figure in our lives; they are always present to lift us up through quiet encouragement, well-meaning reality checks or unwavering belief in our dreams.
I’ve been lucky enough to have a few of those motherly figures in my life to look up to. First and foremost my amazing mum who has always had my back through life’s ups and downs. The first one to praise my achievements, scold my silliness at times, laugh through life with and be my fiercest supporter! Whenever I come up with another crazy idea she’ll shake her head at me, tell me I’m mad and then sit for hours helping me work through it.
Then there are my grandmothers, who would spoil us with the tastiest treats, hours of fun and games and share stories of years gone by. Sadly my paternal grandmother is no longer with us, but not a day goes by that she isn’t remembered, be that through something we’ve eaten, a phrase that’s been said or the hundreds of memories still cherished. I can vividly imagine the words she’d use to describe my antics, lovingly laughing whilst saying them.

On Mum’s side, my fiercely independent & determined Oma. Despite her age she’s still so mentally sharp and can recall hundreds of events from our childhood as well as all of her trips to the UK to visit us; something I’m still in awe of today given she can’t speak more than a word or two of English!
Whoever the motherly figure(s) in your life, remember, cherish and celebrate them! Mine have certainly made me who I am today.
